Flake Sulphur

Flake Sulphur (also called sulfur flakes) is another solid form of elemental sulfur (S₈) — produced by cooling molten sulfur into thin, flat flakes. It is widely used in the chemical, rubber, and agricultural industries due to its high purity, easy handling, and consistent size.

What Is Flake Sulphur

  • Form: Thin, flat flakes of sulfur, typically 2–6 mm wide and less than 1 mm thick
  • Color: Bright yellow
  • Odor: Odorless in pure form (but can have a faint sulfur smell if impure)
  • Composition: Elemental sulfur (S₈) — usually >99.5% purity

How It Works (Mode of Action)

  • When Bentonite Sulphur 90 is applied to soil and moistened, the bentonite clay swells, breaking the granule into fine sulfur particles.
  • These fine sulfur particles are then oxidized by soil bacteria (mainly Thiobacillus species) into sulfate (SO₄²⁻) — the form that plants can absorb.
  • The oxidation process is gradual, providing long-term sulfur availability and reducing soil pH (acidification).

How It’s Produced

Flake sulfur is made by:

  • Melting elemental sulfur (from natural gas or petroleum refining).
  • Feeding the molten sulfur onto a steel cooling belt or drum flaker.
  • The molten layer solidifies into thin flakes as it cools.
  • The flakes are scraped off, cooled, and packaged.

This controlled process gives uniform shape and purity, with low dust compared to powdered sulfur.

Main Uses of Flake Sulphur

Industrial Applications

  • Sulfuric acid production (H₂SO₄) — key raw material in fertilizers, batteries, and chemicals.
  • Rubber industry: Used in vulcanization to improve flexibility and durability.
  • Detergent manufacturing and chemical synthesis (e.g., sulfites, sulfates).
  • Pharmaceuticals: In certain ointments and formulations.

Agriculture

  • Used as an input for manufacturing granular sulfur fertilizers and micronized sulfur.
  • Occasionally used directly to acidify alkaline soils (though not as readily available to plants as sulfate forms).
